How to Brush
Before anything else, you go ahead and brush the scalp with a boar bristle brush. Small C-shaped movements: start at the front of the scalp, work around the face to the top of the ear, back to the crown, then down through the nape, connecting side to side until you have covered the whole head.
Brushing the scalp does the same thing people pay for in a treatment room. It moves the blood, it lifts the dirt and debris up where the shampoo can get it, and it costs you nothing but a brush.
Most professionals brush the hair and call it brushed. Brush the scalp. That is the whole point of the step.
